The Augusta University volleyball team played three sets in an intrasquad scrimmage at Christenberry Fieldhouse on Friday, Aug. 30.

The Blue team won the first two sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-22. They Grey team took the third set 25-23.

“What we saw tonight was not what we have seen in practice,” said AU Coach Sharon Quarles. “Players stepped up, more than what we've seen in the season so far. It was great to have this opportunity to put them in a situation where they can start competing.”

Quarles thought the atmosphere was outstanding.

“The teams were very balanced and it was competitive, so the fans got involved,” she said.

There were a few things that concerned her.

“Our serves were not working for us. We missed way too many serves,” Quarles said. “And we need to work on getting those last minute jitters out, and get to know the people we’re playing next to.”

The scrimmage was a tuneup before the regular season begins on the road this coming weekend. The Jaguars, coming off a 21-8 campaign last season, open 2025 with three matches in Lakeland, Fla., at Florida Southern College.

“I think we’re ready to go to Florida,” Quarles said.

AU will open Friday, Sept. 5, against St. Leo University at 10 a.m., followed by a match with Hillsdale College at 4 p.m. Then, on Saturday, Sept. 6, Augusta will play host Florida Southern at 5 p.m.

The second weekend of the season will be played at USC Aiken, with opponents being North Greenville, Mount Olive and Francis Marion. Matches will be on Sept. 12-13.
