AU opens VB season with four-set win over St. Leo

Mia Saavedra and Layne Witherspoon each had 15 kills to lead Augusta University to a four-set win over St. Leo University on Friday, Sept. 5, in Lakeland, Fla., in the Jags’ season-opening match.

The Jaguars (1-0) won by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 26-24 in the Florida Southern Volleyball Classic at the George W. Jenkins Field House.

Saavedra, the junior from Tampa, Fla., also had 10 digs for AU. Witherspoon hit at a .444 clip to lead the offense.

Sydney Harrington, the transfer from Virginia Commonwealth, had 33 assists and 11 digs. Giulia Rodrigues had 19 dig, sand Sofia Snitsarevych totaled seven blocks to lead the defensive effort.

Molly Chappell led St. Leo with 11 kills.

The Jaguars will play Hillsdale College at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5.
