Get to know AU women's golfer Mirabel Ting

Mirabel Ting has recently received the Division I Kim Moore Spirit Award, provided by the 2023 Women’s Golf Coaches Association.

Ting was a freshman at Augusta University at the time of receiving the award, at 17 years of age. Originally from Miri, Malaysia, Ting’s first trip to America was to come to Augusta University. She began her journey with the golf team here at the same time she began her journey with the University.

Her father’s health began to rapidly decline throughout her first year, though. He was diagnosed with a heart issue during the summer, and soon after, he passed. Ting withdrew from the university in order to go home and be with family during this time. She received an immense amount of support in this time by friends and family.

“It’s a life changer to be able to meet these amazing people in my life. Beyond thankful and grateful for everyone,” she said, in regards to the people around her that helped her this past year.

She soon returned to Augusta University, and with that, returned to the AU Golf team. She immediately began advancing in the sport and went on to compete in the playoffs with her team. There, she won, having completed the course with an eagle.

This strength and prowess in golf soon led to her receiving the Division I Kim Moore Spirit Award.

This award is one that focuses on the motivation of the golfer, not just their golf prowess. While Ting’s amazing golfing abilities cannot be denied, neither can her determination to win, her involvement with her teammates or her positivity throughout life. These premises are largely what the Division I Kim Moore Spirit Award was looking for. There is no better example of someone dedicated to their craft, even through adversity, than Ting.

“I normally just do well in my preparations, there is nothing to worry about if I practice the right way,” Ting specified when asked on how she prepares to win awards and succeed as she has.

She thanked her family and supporters for helping her get to where she is now. She also thanks Coach Wilsoon Choo from Malaysia for supporting her throughout her golfing journey.

She is currently competing in the Arnold Palmer Cup as a part of the International Team.

“My thoughts for staying motivated throughout the championship are just to have fun, play my best and enjoy every moment I have with the team,” she said when asked about her motivation for her performance in the past.

With a positive mindset like Ting’s, growth and success are bound to follow.

She had a bit of advice for young people looking to succeed, like herself.

“My advice to young people is to just focus day by day and not think too much ahead about the future,” Ting said. “It is good to have a plan but it is also not great to think too far ahead. Stay hungry, stay patient, and stay committed to everything they do in life, whether it is in golf or any other sports or even life. Enjoy every second, and moment and live the life that they or their people would be proud of.”
