Augusta University officially welcomed its newest Jaguars on Sunday, Aug. 10, as more than 600 freshmen gathered for the annual freshman convocation at the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre.
The event marked the first official academic gathering for the class of 2029, and the energy in the theatre reflected the excitement of a new chapter beginning. Augusta University President Russell T. Keen presided over the ceremony, offering a warm welcome and words of encouragement to the incoming students.
Undergraduate Student Government Association President John Blalock also addressed the new students, encouraging them to embrace every opportunity Augusta University has to offer, get involved in campus life, and support one another throughout their academic journey.
One of the most anticipated moments was when the deans from each college presented each of the freshmen with their Class of 2029 pin. The pin, signifying membership and academic pride, will be worn once more at the commencement ceremony when students graduate in four years. It was a moment of pride for many that made the fact that they were going to college at last become real for them.
After the formal program, the freshmen in attendance assembled for a class photo inside the theatre, getting the first of many group memories that they will share as a class. Students then went to the Williams Ballroom inside the JSAC for dinner on a rainy Sunday evening. Inside, the atmosphere was bright and full of conversation, as students met new classmates, faculty members, and campus leaders.
Before the ceremony, Into the Wild podcast host Raysean Ricks recorded a live show, building a warm-up for the evening with stories and conversation that welcomed freshmen to the vibrant campus life.
The evening concluded on a sweet note with a dessert reception from President Keen and the First Lady. As rain continued to fall, students left with full plates, new friends, and the excitement of knowing their Augusta University experience had just started.
