Sports roundup: Led by Wilken and Jacobs, AU men finish 10th in Haskins Invitational at Forest Hills

The Augusta University men’s golf team finished 10th in the Haskins Award Invitational over the weeknd at Forest Hills Golf Club.
Dean Wilken led the way for the Jaguars, who finished at 18 under par for the 54-hole event the wrapped up April 5. Wilken’s three-day score was 7 under par as he shot under par each day. He finished 21st in the individual race.
Next for host AU was Stefan Jacobs in 28th with a score of 5 under par, and third was Bo Blanchard II at 1 under par.
UNC-Chapel Hill won the tournament with a 54-under-par total, led by medalist Sihan Sandhu at 15 under par.
In the team race, second place went to Oklahoma State, followed by Pepperdine in third.
Augusta finished ahead of Georgia Southern, Northwestern, Virginia Tech, Mercer, St. John’s and Air Force.
Softball gets single win at Lander
The AU softball team defeated Lander 2-1 behind pitcher Madalyn Spinks on April 4 in Greenwood, S.C.
The Jaguars scored two runs in the top of the fifth to pull out the key Peach Belt Conference win. Ansley Gibson singled in Spinks for the game winner.
The other two games were tight Bearcat victories. Lander won 1-0 on April 3 and 4-0 in the series finale on April 4.
The Jaguars, in fifth place in the PBC just a game behind Georgia College, will next play at Mount Olive on April 8 at noon and 2 p.m. That will be a doubleheader.
Jaguar women get wins in triple, high jump
AU’s Taneiha Bowman took first in the triple jump with a leap of 11.43 meters at the Electric City Invitational in Anderson, S.C., on April 3-4.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars’ Nadiyah Byard took first in the high jump after clearing 1.60 meters.
Their efforts helped AU to a fourth-place finish in the meet.
On the men’s side, freshman Caleb Darsey got his first collegiate win with victory in the 5,000 meters. Darsey ran the face in 15 minutes and 0.96 seconds. Teammate Eli Corn was fourth in 15:09.32.
Beck Wolf-Hardy finished third In the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His time was 9:53.00.
AU’s Mitchell Jean Baptiste was a winner in the high jump with a leap 1.98 meters.
The Jaguar men finished seventh in the meet.
Earlier, distance runner Madison Thomas was named Peach Belt runner of the month for March. Thomas shredded the PBC record in the 10,000 meters by 25 seconds.
Up next for AU track and field is the Lee Flames Invitational on Friday, April 10.
Miscellaneous
The Masters will be played at Augusta National on April 9-12. One of the favorites is former Augusta State University standout Patrick Reed, who has won twice on the European Tour this season. He won the Masters in 2018. Rory McIlroy is the defending Masters champion.
