Age is just a number: Anna Reeves shows AU how to lead

In today’s society, politics seems to be at the top of everyone’s minds. This is a hot debate between almost every citizen of the United States, as most everyone has a strong opinion on this topic.

The group of people that are the most vocal about their political views these days are easily young adults– those from the ages of 18-30 years old. We young adults all believe wholeheartedly that our voices deserve to be heard, so we try our hardest to make them heard either through writing or posting a short video on TikTok.

The easiest way, however, that we can defend and uphold our beliefs is to run for the offices that we believe can make the most difference. For example, running for mayor of your town, or simply becoming a local commissioner.

Something else that many young adults believe is that they may not have the ability or credibility to run for offices such as these. Especially college students who are learning how to manage their school work.

Anna Reeves is showing everyone at Augusta University that you can do anything you put your mind to. Student or not.

Anna Reeves is a senior Integrated Studies major here at AU and has just been accepted into the accelerated Public Administration Master’s program. She also owns two small businesses and has served as the president of three nonprofit boards and has held seats on countless other boards.

Before she decided to run for mayor of Blythe, she wanted to run for a commissioner’s seat. However, after the hurricane, she said, she knew her town needed some stronger leaders. This problem called for a more personal solution: she wanted to run for mayor herself.

Now, this decision did not come without its fears. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA since coming to AU, and this is something she has been serious about keeping.

“I definitely had to split my time and do things when I would normally be studying or working on my assignments. Trying to knock on doors, talk to people in the community about issues and other things. So, yes, it has derailed me in study time for sure.”

Through all of this, though, she still takes time to continue to go live on Facebook and make videos, updating the community about important things happening around town.

Reeves takes this role seriously, and she is not letting her age bring her down.

For all the other students out there considering entering politics, follow Anna Reeves’ lead and make the change yourself. As long as it is something you are truly passionate about, age is no reason to be stopped.

She also had a piece of advice to give to students considering going into politics while working on their degree. “I would say it’s never too soon to get involved with your political aspirations. Join a campaign, and learn as much as you can about the campaign process. As well as raising funds, building a base of supporters, being able to network in different groups, and developing strong communication skills.”

Taking such a position as a student is not unreachable, and I believe anyone who truly loves what they’re doing– as Anna does– should be able to. Do not be afraid to step up and share your voice where it matters.

As they say, age is just a number.
