The Guard House Museum’s monthly “Coffee + Donuts” event is right around the corner., on Friday, June 2. These events take place the first Friday of every month, excluding April, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. As the name implies, staff will provide donuts and coffee for attendees to enjoy while talking amongst themselves.

Professor Stacey Thompson, Director of the Guard House Museum, said in a brief statement, “Programs like Donuts+Coffee provide a laid back drop-in where all are welcome to share stories, learn a little history, or simply enjoy a little refreshment.”

She went on to provide further information regarding the founding of the guardhouse and how it became what it is today.

The brick building was assembled in 1866, well into the reconstruction period. In the past, its purpose was alongside the U.S. Army arsenal, serving as an office for the soldiers stationed nearby. Today, its purpose is to educate students and residents alike in the area of Sand Hills and Summerville, as well as provide a welcome center and beginning for the Augusta University History Walk.

There are many other ways students, locals and tourists alike can interact with this museum. The virtual tour is free online for all to access. The building is also free of charge for entry. It is open on Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m to 5 p.m.

The Guard House Museum’s mission reads, “The Augusta University Guard House Museum and History Walk educates the community through the preservation and interpretation of Augusta University history, the history of the grounds and the history of the neighborhoods of Sand Hills and Summerville.”

Such a statement cannot be demonstrated in a better way than through programs like this, with faculty and students alike learning about each other and the grounds they walk on.

Professor Thompson believes in this notion as well.

“Providing a regular community event at the museum is important for both students and community members as we learn to communicate with each other, and celebrate the many voices represented in our shared history,” she said.
