AU men's golf opens season with 11-stroke win in Jaguar Fall Invitational

The Augusta University men’s golf team opened its 2026 season in dominant fashion, capturing the Jaguar Fall Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club on Tuesday, Sept. 1, with an 11-shot victory over High Point University.
The Jaguars finished the tournament at 23 under par, while High Point placed second at 12 under. Belmont finished third at 5 under as Augusta used a balanced performance throughout its lineup to pull away from the field on its home course.
On the individual side, Pieter Rossouw Jr. and Chapman Barnett shared medalist honors with 9-under-par final totals after entering the final round tied for the lead and remaining even through the finish.
Both golfers shot 2 under in Tuesday’s final round, but they took different paths to the top of the leaderboard.
Barnett, competing as an individual, faced some pressure down the stretch before making a dramatic up-and-down for birdie on his final hole of the day. Rossouw answered with a birdie on the 302-yard, par-4 No. 18 to close his round and secure a share of the individual title.
“It was really good,” Barnett said. “It was a little stressful out there. Definitely had some more bogeys than I wish, but I stuck to my game plan and tried to take it one shot at a time.”
For Barnett, the approach remained the same despite competing individually rather than contributing directly to Augusta’s team score.
“It is a tad different,” Barnett said. “At the end of the day, I had my game plan out there and that was all I could do, just focus on myself and hope that the results come.”
The opening tournament also provided an early test of endurance for the Jaguars, who played 36 holes on Aug. 31.
“You have to do them,” Barnett said. “There is no way to train for a 36-hole day other than by playing 36 holes. It is just as much physical game as it is mentally out there.”
While Rossouw and Barnett led the individual standings, Augusta’s team victory was supported by contributions throughout the lineup.
Andries van der Vyver finished fourth overall after shooting 1 under in the final round. He recorded four birdies and three bogeys on the day.
Pascal Gunther also shot 70 in the final round, recording three birdies and one bogey to finish eighth individually.
Nicholas van der Vyver rounded out Augusta’s counting scores with a 1-under round that included five birdies. Marcus Goosen shot a 77 as the Jaguars’ non-counting score.
Augusta also had several players competing as individuals. Jason Ressell shot 70, while Max Thomas posted a 74. Brandon Skidmore finished with a 75, and Josh Daniels carded a 76.
The Jaguars finished the final round at 6-under par, one of only three teams in the field to finish under par on the day.
For Rossouw, the victory reflected the competitive environment within Augusta’s roster.
“Everybody pushes each other,” Rossouw said. “We’ve got some young blood on the team as well, so hopefully we can show our seniority on the team. We have a lot of fun at practice and we always keep our spirits up.”
The tournament victory gives Augusta an early boost as it begins its fall schedule. Rossouw said the performance could provide valuable confidence later in the season.
“It is definitely our goal to add another couple of good finishes for the season,” Rossouw said. “This is just a little confidence booster. Coming in from vacation, this is a great achievement. It is also good for when we are in the later stages, you can look back at this and say, ‘We have done this before.’”
Augusta will look to carry that momentum into its next event, the Cincinnati Bearcat Invitational, scheduled for Sept. 15-16.
After opening the season with an 11-shot victory and sharing the individual title, the Jaguars have already given themselves something to look back on—and, as Rossouw said, proof that they have done it before.
