The Office of the President released a statement following two separate incidents that occurred in Augusta on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 7.
The first involved a report of aggravated assault at a city bus stop located between Harper Street and Walton Way. The suspect, described as a white male, fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.
Later that day, a body was discovered at a Chevron gas station on Laney Walker Boulevard. As of Wednesday morning, a suspect in that case was reported to be in police custody.
According to authorities, both incidents involved members of the local homeless population and were not connected to anyone affiliated with Augusta University.
Many students expressed shock and concern after hearing this news.
“I can’t believe both of these happened on the same day, and near campus,” says student Koryn Parsons. “I was really surprised to receive these alerts. I do feel better now knowing there is no threat to our community.”
In a statement, AU President Russell Keen emphasized that the safety and well-being of students remain the university’s top priority.
Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to download the Rave Guardian app, which provides access to safety escort services, direct communication with AU Police, and the ability to call 911 in the event of an emergency.
President Keen also expressed gratitude to the Augusta University Police Department for its prompt response to both incidents.
To report any suspicious activity, call 706-721-2911.
