Autrey leads AU women to victory at N. Georgia; Jag men also win

Elyse Autrey totaled 24 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists to lead the Augusta University women’s basketball team past North Georgia in Dahlonega on Wednesday, Jan. 21, in a key Peach Belt Conference contest.
Autrey got plenty of help from Amari Jackson, who added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Jaguars (7-3, 12-5). Quinasia Abercrombie added 14 points and five rebounds for the Jags.
Augusta now finds itself in three-way tie for second place with North Georgia and USC Beaufort. Columbus State is a half game ahead of those three teams.
Averie Jones led the Nighthawks (7-3, 12-8) with 24 points.
Augusta used a 29-10 third quarter to take control of the game after North Georgia led 39-31 at the half.
AU’s next game will be Saturday, Jan. 24, at Flagler at 11 a.m.
Palsson leads Jaguar men to 83-72 win over UNG
Elias Palsson had 27 points to lead the AU men to an 83-72 win over the Nighthawks, who were led by guard AJ White with 24.
Evan Joyner added 23 for the visitors, who improved to 4-6 in the league and 9-11 overall. Matias Zanotto added 10 points for AU. Freshman DaRon Dubnar made his first start at AU and scored nine points on a 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range.
“We passed the ball and screened well, and we made a few shots,” AU coach Dip Metress said of his team’s play in the win over the Nighthawks. “Daron was able to loosen things up by making those 3-pointers.”
Metress is now just two wins away from 600 for his career.
The Jaguars will play at Flager on Saturday at 1 p.m.
