Adventure is just steps away for Augusta University students, thanks to the grand opening of the new Outdoor Recreation Center, featuring a state-of-the-art climbing wall and a multi-element obstacle course.
This is part of Augusta University’s broader initiative to promote student well-being, mental health, and community engagement through physical activity. The new facility aims to provide an exciting and accessible way for students to stay active.
Located near the Health Sciences Campus and adjacent to the Augusta University Police Department building, the center is home to a 35-foot climbing wall with routes for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced climbers. Next to the wall, students can take on an outdoor obstacle course that includes rope climbs, balance elements, a zip line, and ninja warrior-style challenges.
Thursday night's opening celebration drew hundreds of students and featured free climbing sessions, giveaways, and live music.
“I’m so excited for this opportunity to engage with other students,” said junior Sanaa Henry. “I’m glad Augusta University put this together for us—this is such a unique experience.”
For many students, including sophomore Tyla (last name withheld), it was their first time on a climbing wall or obstacle course.
“I’m not that scared, but I’m a bit nervous about falling,” she said. “This is my first time doing something like this, so I’m excited to give it a go.”
Some students, like Celine Banna, were eager to return to a sport they love.
“After coming to college, I stopped climbing as often, so having this here is super exciting,” Banna said. “I think it’s challenging enough, especially the inner climbing wall, to give me a challenge.”
Others welcomed the new facility as a fresh alternative to traditional fitness routines.
“I’m excited to be able to exercise outside,” said senior Lia Carter. “It’s nice to have this untraditional option so close to campus.”
The climbing wall and obstacle course are open to all students, faculty, and staff. Equipment is provided at no cost, though participants must complete a waiver and a brief orientation before using the facilities.
Designated climbing nights are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students must reserve a spot in advance to access the obstacle course.
Campus Recreation also offers team-building obstacle course challenges for student clubs and organizations, which can sign up as a group to complete the course together.
Students interested in getting more involved can apply to work at the Outdoor Recreation Center. Paris, a student employee, described the job as “a fun and unique experience.”
Employees can help climbers reach the top, work with rentals, or give safety demonstrations.
