CommuniCon 2024 to be ‘an event like no other’

Springtime is here again and with it returns CommuniCon, an event hosted by Augusta University's Department of Communication. This year, the department will host a two-part experience entitled “An Event Like No Other,” featuring golf-themed decorations and activities.

Students in the Public Relations and Social Media Campaigns class are heading up the event from concept to completion. They posted advertisements on the department’s Instagram and Facebook accounts and planned for all Pamplin students to get an email about the event.

The Campaigns course is offered every Spring and is open to all students, with the prerequisite of the Integrated Strategic Communication course, COMM3600. It teaches students the techniques public relations practitioners most often use in their work aiding clients and employers to gain influence in the marketplace of ideas.

Carrie Reif-Stice, a communication professor at AU, teaches the course and said it helps students gain applicable real-world skills that can be used on an interview and in other marketable arenas.

“If you’re interested in event planning, event execution, disseminating messages, and developing deliverable materials to help advertise those messages, it’s the class for you,” she said.

CommuniCon not only advertises the department and its offerings, but it also gives student organizations a chance to get some traction, according to Reif-Stice. She stated that it is important to showcase the different organizations that students can belong to, regardless of major.

“We don’t need you to be a [communication] major to write for the Bell Ringer,” said Reif-Stice. “We have this opportunity for you to grow your resume. Take advantage of it if you’re an undergrad student.”

“Par 1” of Communicon will take place Wednesday, April 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Maxwell Theatre. It is open to all AU students and will feature a live band, putting greens, and free hamburgers and hot dogs. There will be opportunities to meet and speak with members of multiple student organizations, play games and get free t-shirts.

“Par 2” will take place Thursday, April 25 Par 2 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the JSAC Coffeehouse and all Communication students are invited to attend. Lunch will be catered by Laziza’s and the event will feature guest speakers, awards and superlatives.
