Food review: Health Sciences Café packs a big punch

By McKenzie Morgan | Staff writer

Though small and quaint, the new Health Sciences Café packs a big punch. Located in the Health Science Building in the Raymond C. Bard Student Lounge, students from all over Augusta University’s Health Sciences campus can easily grab a quick bite to eat or a coffee.

The café has several healthier options such as ham or turkey and cheese sandwiches, assorted bagels, fruit and salads. It also has several different types of drinks, coffee, chips and pastries.

To be honest, when I walked in, I didn’t expect much. It was quite a small room and not many people were in there. I soon came to find that my original thoughts were incorrect.

I was greeted by a very nice worker and a large array of food options. Her service was quick and efficient, even when the small room began filling with students. The atmosphere was welcoming with popular music playing and though all of the food looked delicious, I decided to get the fruit salad, an everything bagel with cream cheese and a large hot chocolate.

The fruit was cut into small, palatable pieces. The mix of strawberries, grapes, pineapple, and melon was invigorating and tasted like it had just been cut.

I also enjoyed the bagel a lot. It wasn’t dry like most other bagels you would find at the store and the seeds on top were flavorful. The different flavors of cream cheese were packed into a labeled, small plastic containers. I decided to use the plain cream cheese, because the bagel was already flavorful enough. It was cold and there was just the right amount in the container.

Lastly, the hot chocolate. I am not a huge fan of coffee so I stuck with something lighter. For me, hot chocolate can easily be messed up. I prefer my hot chocolate to be made with milk, tons of chocolate and marshmallows on top. I was delightfully surprised when a hot chocolate made with water, fulfilled my picky tastebuds. It was delicious. The drink was chocolatey and creamy. A must have.

The Health Sciences Café was a pleasant surprise. Delicious and healthier food options can be difficult to find on the go, but this new café makes it possible.
