With finals week just around the corner, the Center for Writing Excellence (CWE) offered an event to aid in writing help and socialization, as well as a study and work space. Every semester, the “Fuel Your Finals” event offers pizza, swag bags, cupcakes and writing assistance to lessen the stress of the end of the semester.

Located on the first floor of Allgood Hall, room E158, consultants were available to aid with account creation, questions about the center and help with papers, PowerPoints, speeches and more.

Alison O’Keefe, a consultant who can be found on the grad student appointment schedule, explained the benefits attending the event offers students and provided more information about the event for future semesters.

“‘Fuel Your Finals’ gives students an opportunity to take a brief break before finals start,” she said, “to study and socialize in a welcoming space.”

O’Keefe said that finals week and the week leading up to it can be a tumultuous time, even for consultants who are also undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to snacks and socializing, the event gives students a peek into how the CWE can assist them.

“The stress of the end of the semester can feel daunting,” she said, “and even possibly lonely. The event can give [students] an opportunity to see finals as less than that.”

Lasting from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event saw an influx of students, hour by hour, and created a connection between relaxation and assistance. Lastly, O’Keefe said that due to the overwhelming nature of finals, the CWE’s event makes a larger impact.

“Dissolving some of that apprehension helps to change how students frame studying, as well as writing,” she said. “If we can create confidence, that makes all the difference.”
