Augusta University hosts faculty recitals every year so that the faculty members in the Department of Music can showcase their music research and practice their musical craft.

To start off this year’s series of faculty recitals, Wycliffe Gordon will perform in the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre on Friday, Jan. 16.

Gordon is a world-renowned jazz musician, composer and performer. He has studied several wind instruments and can play all of them with incredible agility, expression and technique. He is best known for his trombone playing.

As a faculty member in the Department of Music, Gordon teaches trombone and is director of jazz studies.

With this talent, he has held the title of trombonist of the year 13 times and has earned the title of best trombone from Downbeat Critics Poll six times.

As the director of jazz studies at AU, Gordon has helped his students become masters of their own instruments by directing the AU Jazz Ensemble.

Gordon’s faculty recital will occur on at 5 p.m. on Friday. For tickets, visit augusta.universitytickets.com.

AU students and faculty, as well as children, are free at the door.

General public admission is $10. Admission for AU alumni, active and retired military, and senior citizens is $7.
