By Lia Barnes | Staff writer
Every year, Augusta University partners with area colleges to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
MLK Day, to be celebrated with a federal holiday on Jan. 19, is a time to reflect on the injustices that occurred during the Civil Rights Movement and to discover ways on how we can further change from that time as American people.
This year, on Friday, Jan. 16, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tri-College Celebration will take place in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel at Paine College. It will begin at noon.
Rev. Lamell McMorris is the guest speaker. He is the author of “The Power to Persist.”
The event starts, with the Augusta University Singers and a chorus from Augusta Technical College performing “Dream Keeper,” “I am Only One” and “Great Day” with Brandon Stewart as the soloist.
This year’s Tri-College Celebration theme: is “Martin for Then and Now: Connecting the Struggle Across Time.”
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn.
Augusta University will be closed on Jan. 19 for the MLK Day.
The Blue Route buses will transport all students, faculty and employees to the Memorial Chapel during its route on Friday.
