Heat advisory in effect for Augusta

The National Weather Service has posted a heat advisory for the Central Savannah River Valley that is in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16.

NWS says to take extra precaution when outside. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing; and limit strenuous activities to the early early morning or evening.

The weather service says that those working outside should take frequent breaks in air-conditioned areas or shaded areas.

The temperature at 5 p.m Saturday, Aug. 15, was 97 degrees in Augusta. Humidity was 47 percent at 5 p.m. Saturday. Heat index values were between 105 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

There was a chance of thunderstorms in the evening.

Be ready for updates Sunday as Monday’s forecast calls for the high temperature to be near 100 degrees F, with 97 degrees forecast for Tuesday, Aug. 18, the first day of fall classes at Augusta University.

Lows the next few mornings should be in the upper 70s.

A ridge of high pressure across Southeast is causing the intense heat. There were a pair of lows through North Carolina, but Georgia was well to the south of those fronts. Still, scattered evening thunderstorm are possible through Sunday.
