Jaguars rally falls short as they drop the Battle for the Paddle 7-5 against Aiken

The Jaguars mounted a late comeback effort but ultimately fell 7–5 to USC Aiken on Tuesday night.
USC Aiken did most of its damage early, scoring four runs in the third inning and adding three more in the fourth to take a commanding 7–0 lead. Augusta struggled to convert early opportunities and finished with six hits while leaving eight runners on base.
Despite the deficit, the Jaguars showed resilience.
Augusta responded with a four-run fifth inning to shift the momentum and later added a run in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate. Leading the charge was Nate Martin, who went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI. His solo shot provided a spark as the Jaguars attempted to claw their way back into the game.
“We were down three. I needed to pass it on to these guys behind us—just trying to get on base,” Martin said. “It just happened to line up.”
Head coach Chris Howell credited the bullpen for keeping Augusta within striking distance after the early deficit.
“I thought we settled in. We came in in some situations and got the outs—that was needed,” Howell said. “Our bullpen gave us a shot… they came in, threw strikes, and got the big out in the inning.”
Augusta’s relievers combined to limit further damage after the fourth inning, allowing the offense an opportunity to respond late.
Howell also praised his team’s fight down the stretch.
“They never unpacked the bags. These guys kept going, kept chopping, grinding out at-bats, chipping away one at a time,” he said. “We competed late and gave ourselves a shot at it.”
Martin echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the energy his home run brought to the team.
“That energy—it brought up the morale of the team and kind of gave us that last little fight,” Martin said. “We just ended up falling toward the end.”
Augusta drops to 15–16 on the season and will head back to Jaguars field for a weekend series against North Georgia.
