AU women’s golf team clinches a second-place finish at the Redbird Invitational

The Jaguar women’s golf team scored big by placing second at the Redbird Invitational in their second tournament of the fall season in Normal, Ill.

The University of St. Thomas finished first and host Illinois State University took third in the tourney held at the D.A. Weibring Golf Course.

The Jaguars played three rounds in the two-day tournament, finishing at 15 over par. AU had a solid start in the first round, shooting 3 over par, but the second round went downhill, with Augusta slumping to 10 over par. In the third round, as the Jaguars completed their lowest round at 2 over. 

Sara Adams, a senior, had hoped for a better finish.

“Anytime you have a chance to win, that’s the goal, but this time we came up short,” said the graduate student from Whispering Pines, N.C. “There are many things to learn from this tournament, especially about finishing strong. But there are many positives to take for the rest of the season.”

Individually, Augusta’s Puntita Pawichai tied for second at 1 over par; Danielle Higbee tied for fifth at 4 over; Adams tied for fifth at 5 over; Sofia Valera tied for ninth at 6 over, and McKinley Holding tied at 39th at 15 over.

The women’s golf team will compete next at the Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C., from Sept. 18 through Sept. 20.
