Walking in Augusta

Walking in Augusta

Have a pair of comfy shoes on hand. Okay, okay. On foot.

When it comes to walking, you might have heard of the benefits of this moderate activity before. However, this is your reminder to embrace it here in Augusta.

Whether it’s downtown or on the historic Summerville campus, taking a few steps outdoors is something we should all take advantage of.

Studies show that walking near water also has a beneficial effect. Conveniently enough, the Augusta area has quite a few places where you can walk along or near water.

Savannah River Rapids, Augusta Canal, Lake Olmstead and Brick Pond Park are a few locations in the CSRA with this scenery.

Recently, I walked with my family on the Fifth Street Pedestrian Bridge. It was calming to watch the sun set over my city with the view of the Savannah River beneath.

This pedestrian street bridge is also near Augusta’s iconic Riverwalk. In recent years, concerns about maintaining the Riverwalk have been a topic of discussion. Currently, funds have been set aside to keep the Riverwalk in great shape.

My hope is that each of the places I mentioned are maintained for future generations to enjoy walking along.

As a native Augustan, I hope to see more walkways brought to the Garden City as well.

Not only is this something that adds life to our city, but to our own lives too.

It’s time to walk the walk.
