Fayetteville State nips Jaguar men in overtime, 95-94

Staff report

Fayetteville State edged Augusta University 95-94 in overtime on Saturday, Nov. 22., in a non-conference men’s college basketball game at Capel Arena in Fayetteville, N.C.

Rodney Scott, the freshman from Baltimore, Md., nearly gave the Jaguars’ the victory, but his length-of-the-court drive to the hoop resulted in a missed layup as the horn sounded at the end of overtime.

Charlie McBeath had hit a dramatic 3-pointer with 11 seconds to play to cut the Broncos’ lead to a single point. AU fouled immediately on the inbounds play.

After FSU’s Ezekiel Cannedy missed both free throws, McBeath rebounded and fed Scott, who roared down the court. Scott used his explosive speed to attack the basket, but his layup at the horn just rolled out.

The Jaguars trailed by as many as 11 with 9:33 left to play, but coach Dip Metress’s team battled back. Scott actually had a chance to win it at the end of regulation after teammate Elías Pálsson made two late free throws.

However, Scott’s shot just missed, sending the game to the extra period.

Pálsson, on a tear of late, finished with a game-high 35 points and eight rebounds. Post player Luis Nonfon added 18 points and seven boards, and McBeath had 12 points and 10 rebounds for AU (2-4). Scott had eight points and five assists.

Larry Howell had 24 points and Romeo Aquino 23 for the Broncos (2-2).

The Jaguars shot 50 percent from the floor but missed 14 free throws—crucial in such a tight game.

Augusta will host Converse University at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25, in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguar women (2-1) will have a 5:30 tilt at Coker that same day.
