The Augusta Greenjackets closed out the season on a high note on Sunday, Sept. 7, with a 10-0 win over the Annapolis Canon Ballers at SRP Park in North Augusta.
Augusta took two of six games in the series, finishing the year just above .500. The GreenJackets ultimately fell short of a playoff spot, ending 10.5 games behind the first place Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
It was a long season filled with standout performances. The GreenJackets’ bats kept them competitive, as there team combined for 57 home runs. Mason Guerra led the way with nine, followed by Douglas Gold and John Gil with seven apiece.
This season also marked an important step for the Braves’ Low-A affiliate. A Braves Low-A affiliate team had not produced multiple hitters age 19 or younger with a wRC+ above 100 since Ronald Acuña Jr. and Austin Riley did it in 2016. wRC+ (Weighted Runs Created Plus) is a stat that measures a hitter’s total offensive value, adjusted for league and ballpark, with 100 being league average.
John Gil, who was promoted to Double-A on Sept. 9 to finish the year, led the way with a 117 wRC+. Eric Hartman wasn’t far behind at 114, while Isaiah Drake posted a 110 wRC+ before moving up to High-A Rome. Owen Carey also joined the list with a 104 wRC+. For Augusta, that meant four different teenage hitters were producing above league-average offense, a sign of a strong future pipeline.
Pitching was another strength. Augusta’s staff struck out a total of 1,098 batters this season. Key contributors included Rayven Antonio (95 strikeouts), Owen Hackman (96 strikeouts), and top prospect Cam Caminiti, who tallied 75.
Fans were a huge part this year.
“It was a lot of fun watching these guys this season,” one fan said. “They fell short, but they still worked hard all season.”
Support for the GreenJackets remains strong, especially for a Low-A team. SRP Park’s atmosphere stood out, with fan engagement and themed nights creating a unique experience nearly every home game.
With a loyal fan base behind them, the Augusta GreenJackets will look to build on this season’s foundation when they return next year.
