The Augusta University softball team came up short in a nonconference doubleheader against Wingate on Wednesday at Jaguar Field, falling 6-1 in game one and 4-1 in game two. With the losses, the Jaguars move to 7-9 on the season.
In the opener, Wingate struck first with a solo home run in the second inning and never looked back. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fourth and two insurance runs in the seventh to seal the 6-1 win.
Augusta’s lone run came in the sixth inning when Nevaeh Ross singled and later scored on an RBI from Ansley Gibson. Ross led the Jaguars offensively, finishing 2-for-2 with a double and a stolen base, while Grace Bailey also added two hits.
Game two started with promise as Augusta grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sam Tener singled to open the game and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Payton Terrell.
However, Wingate responded with three runs in the second inning and added another in the fifth to secure the 4-1 victory. Tener and Ayellad Howard recorded Augusta’s only hits in the nightcap. Kristyn Ezzo struck out six over five innings, and Terrell tossed two scoreless innings in relief to close the game strong.
Despite the losses, the Jaguars showed flashes of offensive production and solid relief pitching as they look to bounce back in their next matchup.
